Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy

What is Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy?

The face and oral cavity are composed of a large matrix of muscles that must work in harmony to function properly. Dysfunction can occur for a variety of reasons, such as nasal obstruction, noxious oral habits, restricted oral tissues (Ex. Tongue tie), birth trauma, etc.

The ultimate goal of OMT is normalizing incorrect oral functions related to swallowing, mouth breathing, chewing, etc. and promoting continuous nasal breathing and proper oral posture. This is done by giving patients a series of non-painful, easy exercises to help strengthen and co-ordinate the muscles of the orofacial complex.

This takes time and diligent practice on the patient’s part. Patients are expected to complete daily exercises for 6-12 months. Depending on patient compliance more may be needed.
